The largest of the mountain villages whilst still retaining its charm and traditional stone buildings. The big draw is its central village square with shady plane trees, great food from several tavernas and interesting shops . There is a range of accommodation and rentable cottages. Also a regular bus from Lefkada Town.
Several hike options either up the mountain behind Karya or out across the polje below the village. The pine forests around the villages give wonderful shade. What is a polje? An area with no way out for streams above ground. It partially floods in winter. See Geology of Lefkada.
Karya hosts a mock Greek wedding each summer. Also the small museum is well worth a visit.

Best Hikes
Karya to Profitis Ilias (M4)
A hike up the mountain directly above Karya on top of which is an extraordinarily pretty church and amazing viewpoint. A climb of 500m up a steep but wonderful monopati. Return by the same route or drop down the trail to Eglouvi and then back along the road (downhill all the way).
Karya to Nikiana via Alexandros
A hike across the Karya polje to Alexandros then over Skaros mountain down to Nikiana. Part of the Lefkada Trail. A long and challenging but rewarding route. Buses run from start and end back to Lefkada Town. Walk in either direction depending on whether you prefer ascent or decent. An option is to Alexandros only then return.
