Eglouvi

Tucked high in the central mountains of Lefkada, Eglouvi is a peaceful and authentic village known for its stunning natural surroundings and traditional charm. It’s often considered one of the best places on the island for hikers, with access to some of Lefkada’s most scenic and rewarding mountain trails.

The village is surrounded by terraced fields and stone walls, many still used to grow the region’s renowned Eglouvi lentils, considered among the best in Greece. If you’re here in early August, you might catch the Lentil Festival—a lively local celebration that brings the community together with music, dancing, and, of course, lentil dishes. It takes place high up on the plateau above the village.

While Eglouvi currently offers no tourist accommodation, it’s a fantastic destination for a day trip. The tiny village square is the heart of the community, where a few excellent tavernas serve traditional food and welcome hikers and visitors alike. The atmosphere is peaceful, authentic, and unspoiled.

Eglouvi is within walking distance of Karya and can also be reached by bus from Lefkada Town. The journey itself offers panoramic views and a taste of rural island life.

Whether you’re here to hike, sample the famous lentils, or simply soak up the mountain air, Eglouvi offers a glimpse into the soul of mountain Lefkada.

Note the name is also spelt Eklouvi, Englouvi, Egklouvi, etc, etc. Which is correct? The Greek name “Εγκλουβή”, of course! Take your pick with the English versions depending on if you convert the letters literally or aim for how it is pronounced.

Eglouvi is home of the Eglouvi lentil grown high on the hills above the town. Probably the best lentils in the world – they are tasty and hold their texture when cooked. Only buy from reliable sources – ask in the tavernas in the town or buy online. They sell out very fast after the harvest early August.

Eglouvi to Profitis Ilias (A3)
A steep and slightly scrambly climb up to the mountain church towering above Eglouvi. A very pretty church and gorgeous view are the reward for the 500m climb. An alternative route is to use the high level route to Karya, to climb Profitis Ilias from that side, and then to return down this path.

Eglouvi to Katharia Rachi (A4)
Another 500m climb on the opposite side of Eglouvi. You climb up a very steep slope to the phone masts and then out along the ridge to the best view in Lefkada. Look down on Nidri, the Inland Sea and sometimes as far as Patras and the Gulf of Corinth. Return by the same route or the nearby slightly easier A5 route back to Eglouvi.

Eglouvi to Agios Donatos and the lentil fields loop
A short climb with lots of shade up to the church of Agios Donatos. You can just come back down or take a longer tour around the lentil fields and return by a different route. Great for seeing the lentil fields and wild flower displays in April or May.

Stavrotas from the Road Above Eglouvi
A short but steep and rocky 250m climb to the highest point on Lefkada. This starts from the road driving up from Eglouvi, but if you are fit you can walk the whole way. Amazing views in all directions from the top.
