The central mountainous region of Lefkada is altogether known as Mt Elati – not a peak in itself but a series of peaks thrown up by the still very active geological fault running down the west coast of Lefkada.
The tallest peak at 1182m is Stavrotas. This forms a long north-south ridge buttressing the western side of Mt Elati with impressive, impenetrable cliffs and scree. However it is climbed easily from the north and east.
To the north is Profitis Ilias, only 150m shorter, with a very pretty church on the very top. This has several routes from either Karya or Eglouvi. There is also Mega Oros, but that has an active military radar station on top and cannot be climbed. Note this is not the old inactive Micky Mouse-eared base, above Eglouvi, that is approachable – but beware asbestos in the buildings.
To the east are the ridges running out from Mt Elati: Mnimati, Katharia Rachi, and Alevrata all of which have stunning views out east and south. Out far-east is Skaros with impressive cliffs towering over the east coast – with wonderful oak forests to wander in.
There is accommodation and tavernas in Karya to the north or Syvros to the south. Eglouvi in the centre has good tavernas but limited accommodation. With a car you can drive up and over Elati from all the resorts on the north, south, east and west coasts. Take care as the roads are narrow, twisty and usually barrier-free.
