Alexandros – Kolyvata

Alexandros and Kolyvata are two very traditional mountain villages in central Lefkada, tucked behind the rocky ridge of Skaros. Alexandros, the larger, has long been known for its vineyards, stone houses, and musical traditions. Kolyvata, higher and smaller, lies more hidden, with narrow lanes and terraced fields sloping down toward the plain.

The two villages once shared a deeply connected daily life. Fields were worked together, and water was drawn from a shared well in the valley between them. Women carried heavy clay pots or led donkeys along the steep paths, while children ran barefoot between the olive trees. Music was central to village identity, especially in Alexandros, where local musicians played in the square during feasts and weddings. Life followed the seasons—grape harvest, olive pressing, the August festival of the Panagia.

Both villages suffered depopulation after the war years and earthquakes, with Kolyvata nearly abandoned for decades. But in recent years, both have seen quiet renewal. Descendants and newcomers are restoring the stone homes, visitors come for hiking and heritage, and summer music still drifts across the hills. The revival is slow but real—rooted in memory, landscape, and the slow return of care to once-forgotten places.

There are a few rentable cottages in both villages and one seasonal taverna in Kolyvata.
